book recommendations?

All right, people who love reading. I will trade you real true posts for good book recommendations.

Fiction, nonfiction, memoir, theology, whatever. I've got the time to do it, some Amazon giftcards and have basically been devouring books in the last week. Help a sister out.

Thank you!

-I rreeeaaallllyyy want you to read the Seven Realms Series by Cinda Williams Chima because I'm OBSESSED and they're epic fantasy with wizards thrown in and since you love HP and LOTR with me, I think you'd actually enjoy them besides me just wanting to gush with you about them haha (but i won't hold it against you--also there's a character in it named Fire Dancer and i feel like in real life you would date.. ahhaha)
-Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher

  2. Right now I'm reading Men and Women in the Church, by Sarah Sumner, which is fantastic. It's theology but it's got a lot of her personal story in it and the rest is essentially exegesis all the way through. Very readable and super relevant & affirming for any Christian, especially a Christian woman and especially a Christian woman in ministry!

In other genres, one random book I love is The Book of Flying by Keith Miller. A very poetic novel.

Also just read On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan, which in typical McEwan style was so beautifully written and so meaningful, but ultimately tragic. So that one is a somewhat mixed recommendation.

I'll also recommend Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin (haunting sci-fi / literature) and, on a totally different note, Summerland by Michael Chabon (fairytale + epic baseball story + Native American mythology)

I don't know if you've read any Neil Gaiman but I would recommend all his books too, especially American Gods (feels like an epic) and Stardust (feels like a fairytale).

  3. If you're looking for fantasy novels, I read the first two books in the Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss and really loved them. Best fantasy books I've read in several years. Like Gene Wolfe meets Lloyd Alexander. Short chapters, quick pacing. Almost impossible to put down. This is a story about stories, about how legends are made ... told from a first-person point of view.
